Act Now - Defend LGB Rights in NSW

NSW is now the centre of attention for lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians concerned about the erosion of our rights. There have been several developments, which you have probably read about in the news.

LGB Alliance Australia is working for you on responses to all these developments. But, as you know, it’s a tough job when governments and politicians have been ‘captured’ by LGBTQA+ organisations that no longer believe there’s any merit in protecting the rights of the LGB part of their name.

First, let’s go over what is happening…

Bills, bills, and a (very) little consultation…

State Independent MP Alex Greenwich will be introducing several bills to the NSW Parliament. These bills, if adopted, would affect same-sex attracted persons in NSW. The bills include:

  • Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill 2023

  • Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2023

  • Variation in Sex Characteristics (Restricted Medical Treatment) Bill 2023

At the same time, the NSW government has launched a consultation process regarding a ‘LGBTQ+ Conversion Practices Ban,’ fulfilling an election promise.

The government consultation is being overseen by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice and the NSW Ministry of Health. So far, the consultation has been conducted with minimal advertising to the general public and very few opportunities for input.

How do these affect LGB people?

The texts of the bills have not yet been released but we believe it is coming imminently.

Based on legislative changes made in other states, LGB Alliance Australia is concerned that these bills will introduce gender self-ID, which conflicts with the sex-based rights of same-sex attracted people, especially lesbians, who, as same-sex attracted women, confront a twofold encroachment on their rights.

We unreservedly support a ban on gay conversion therapy as historically understood. However, any bill which redefines homosexuality in terms of gender rather than sex threatens to corrupt the historical meaning of conversion therapy. It also risks criminalising psychotherapeutic approaches to gender dysphoria, a common experience of same-sex attracted people, especially young people.

What are we doing, and how can you help?

An action group has been established with engaged LGB Alliance Australia members volunteering their time.

LGB Alliance Australia is contacting other interested groups to coordinate a response from all the people the government, and Alex Greenwich doesn’t want to listen to.

Talk to your friends and family…

  • LGB Alliance Australia is against conversion practices of every sort - including the conversion of gay kids to identify themselves according to regressive sex stereotypes.

  • We support all kids getting the help they need - and that means helping them to understand that it’s OK to be a boy and like things that girls like and OK to be a girl and like things that boys like.

  • LGB Alliance Australia is against religious, ideological, and medical pressures to make irreversible medical choices.

  • Of course, conversion practices are wrong and terribly damaging. Having conversations with young people about sexuality and pressures to conform is exactly what's needed. Legislation that discourages these conversations is a terrible idea.

  • Agreeing with a young, physically healthy person that drugs and surgery are needed to have a happy life is converting a healthy young body into one that will need constant medical care in adulthood.

  • Politicians promoting the sex stereotypes that underpin TQ+ have decided to throw their hat in with people who think that 'sexual orientation' is old-fashioned and that women and lesbians are not real.

  • We'd like to have the debate: 'Affirmative medical care' IS a conversion practice - but Alex doesn't want to talk about that.
