We Stand With the Doctors Calling for Evidence-Based Care
LGB Alliance Australia was approached by the Australian Doctors Federation (ADF) to help circulate their open letter to national health bodies, urging a critical review of so-called “gender-affirming” medical interventions for young people.
We are proud to support this letter, which has been signed by more than 100 clinicians and researchers from across Australia. It reflects serious and growing concern within the medical community about the lack of high-quality evidence behind puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical interventions prescribed to gender-distressed children and adolescents.
Australia is now out of step with leading European countries, including Sweden, the UK, Finland, and Norway, where health authorities have shifted away from the affirmative model and now recommend psychological support as the first line of care.
The ADF letter highlights urgent problems:
Children and families are not being fully informed of the long-term risks and irreversible consequences of medicalised pathways
Major health organisations have been captured by ideology, sidelining evidence and clinical caution
Vulnerable young people are being harmed by irreversible interventions that fail to address the root causes of their distress
As a group advocating for same-sex attracted people, we have heard firsthand from lesbians and gay men who now regret early medicalisation, saying they were not offered meaningful alternatives to the trans label and treatment path.
We believe every child deserves care grounded in biological reality and developmental understanding, not political ideology.

We thank the ADF for their leadership and urge Australia’s medical institutions to listen.
